Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have apprehended a suspected member of an armed robbery gang with a cut-to-size locally-made pistol and ten live cartridges.
The suspect, Waheed Ijiyemi was on his way to carry out a robbery operation when a team of policemen, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Onipanu, CSP Bamidele Job, accosted him while on routine patrol of the Otta axis of the state on Tuesday night, April 19.
Spokesperson of Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Wednesday April 20, said the police team accosted the suspect, who was riding an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle.
“Immediately the suspect sighted the policemen, he abandoned the motorcycle and took to his heels. He was hotly chased and arrested,” Oyeyemi stated.
According to the PPRO, the suspect confessed on interrogation that he is “an armed robber, and that he was on his way to carry out an operation before he was apprehended.”
At first, when interrogated, the suspect, who had set out from Owode-Yewa en-route toll-gate on the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, claimed that a friend gave him the items to be handed over to someone.
However, he changed the narrative when his accomplice at the toll-gate repeatedly called him in anger, saying it was taking him too long to catch-up with him for their planned robbery operation. he said
The State Commissioner of police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.
